An introduction to CBD Oil

CBD oil is the talk of the wellness industry right now. It’s claimed to have natural anti-depressant and anti-inflammatory effects, and so can offer a range of benefits from helping to alleviate pain, ease anxiety, manage depression and even treat acne.

Obviously as someone with near constant anxiety, CBD oil had piqued my interest, but the job of actually sitting down to research it and find the right brand to try had just been sat dawdling on my to do list for quite some time. So when Synerva CBD Oils sent me a bottle to trial, it was the kickstart I needed.

What exactly is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, is a natural concentrate extracted from the stalks and seeds of cannabis plants like hemp. It’s one of over 100 chemical compounds, known as cannabinoids, found in the cannabis or marijuana plant.

The big question most people have: is it the same as weed, and will it get me high? No. CBD does not have the same psychoactivity as Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabinoid found in cannabis that gets you high. For that reason, CBD oil is perfectly legal in the UK – you can take it as directed and continue to go about your normal routine: no getting stopped by police, fired from work or being high in charge of the kids!

It‘s currently only legal as a food supplement and businesses can’t make any medicinal claims, however research does seem to indicate that CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, a complex signalling network that regulates a variety of biological processes like inflammation responses, pain management, relaxation, mood, sleep, metabolism and appetite.

Whilst there is still a lot of research and study to be done, there are many positive stories of CBD oil being successfully used in the treatment of chronic pain, anxiety and depression, epilepsy and even cancer.

It sounds promising doesn’t it? So if you’re thinking of giving CBD oil a try – remember that there are a LOT of different brands and products out there, claiming to be offering the same thing, so it’s important that you do your research, check your sources and know what you’re looking for. As with any medicinal product, always make sure you’re buying from a reputable source.

What should I be looking for?

THC Content

Look for products extracted from hemp, rather than other members of the cannabis family (as CBD naturally dominates this plant’s makeup), and ensure you’re buying a product that’s THC-free.

Products should state not only how much CBD is in the entire container but also in each dose. This will tell you how much CBD you will be ingesting, which helps you gauge how the product will benefit your condition or overall lifestyle. Dosages change considerably depending on the type of product. Experts generally recommend starting with products that have comparatively low doses.

Sourcing and manufacturing methods

Manufacturers of CBD products can source hemp from many different places, globally. But where the hemp is grown and processed can have a massive impact on the final product. It’s important that the country of origin follows strict standards for good manufacturing and cultivation practices.

Obviously, CBD is a refined product and so goes through a production process, but it’s important for it to stay as natural as possible to ensure potency, purity and quality. Look for products that are completely solvent, pesticide and GMO Free.

Testing standards vary between manufacturers, so make sure you use companies with rigorous processes, high standards and third-party certification. Ideally CBD oil is examined for cannabinoid content reliability and safety prior to being released on the market, and experienced independent technicians should test for degradation, damage, or contamination in the oil (things like heavy metals, mould or bacteria).

Thankfully, Synerva CBD Oils abide by all of these high standards.

What’s their story?

Synerva CBD Oils, based here in the UK, is the brain-child of mum-of-two Clare Hales. After a cycling accident that left Clare’s husband Jason with critical injuries including a broken back, she turned to CBD oil to change his recovery prognosis – and seeing such positive results led Clare to set up a new venture.

“I knew when I had seen the life-changing abilities of the oils first-hand I needed to share our story and help other people see the benefits too. I also wanted to make sure in launching the company that we assisted in the safety of the industry and help push towards more regulation. I am determined to help change the face of the industry. I want people to realise that I am a very normal mum-of-two, I am clearly no drug dealer, and by no means do the products we sell get anyone high. What we do offer is products that are safe and of real quality, and I advise anyone keen to purchase CBD oil that they do so from a reputable supplier or business.

“As the popularity of CBD Oil grows, so does the number of rogue traders. I am very passionate about being known as a seller where all our products have laboratory analysis reports and come with full traceability from seed to bottle. All of our products are sourced from the largest vertically integrated hemp farm in the USA and we are passionate about ensuring our customers get the very best products on the market.”

So what did I think?

Well on my very first taste, I thought I was going to be sick! It was so strong, greasy and I got a bit of a head rush. I really wasn’t keen on the idea of that twice a day. Then I double checked the instructions – I should’ve taken two drops, and what I actually took was two full pippets. Mum brain at its finest – always read the label people!!

Lesson learned, I made sure I only took two drops the next time. The oil has a grassy and peppery taste and it sort of reminds me of fresh straw – it’s unusual, but certainly not unpleasant.

At first, I thought it made me feel a bit paranoid, although I think that feeling was more than likely an automatic psychological association to a partly misspent youth, and not a true effect of the CBD oil itself..!

Actually, I think it’s worked quite nicely in addressing the physical effects of anxiety. It’s been a good way to start the day, and I’ve also taken a couple of extra drops at times when my anxiety has been high, before going out or when I have multiple impending deadlines, for example, and it’s absolutely taken the edge off the short, quickened breath and sense of dread.

CBD oil isn’t going to instantly cure your anxiety – and if you read my post on that topic, you’ll know that I don’t believe that’s possible at all (for now anyway). But for me, it’s important to have as many trusted weapons in my arsenal as possible to tackle it. Gone are the days that I was content (or should I say that I didn’t know any better) to let anxiety and depression hold me hostage. Part of my personal recovery is about understanding, taking control and taking action.

It is something you have to try for yourself, every method doesn’t work for every person. But for me, CBD oil is definitely something I’m going to continue with. Perhaps over a much longer period, it could be part of a cure. Only time will tell.

My CBD oil was gifted, but all opinions are my own.

  1. I’ve been looking into CBD oil recently for pain actually not necessarily stress or anxiety-related. Though truth be told the pain is becoming stressful! When I injured my knee in the summer and had surgery, I didn’t quite expect the pain to be a constant bother. It’s honestly very unpleasant. I’ve read some stuff about how CBD can help with pain, but still have yet to try it…though I would definitely do what you did and take two pipets rather than drops lol!

  2. Thank you so much for this. I’ve been interested in trying CBD oil for my own depression/anxiety. This may be the kickstart that I needed! It’s great that you encouraged people to do their own research and think about their own care and health needs!

    1. This is super informative! I’ve heard several people give nothing but positive reviews when they used CBD to assist in health issues. I haven’t tried it for myself though.

  5. I’ve recently started using CBD oil to see if it will help my headaches, back pain and anxiety. It’s definitely worth trying out.
