I’m very excited to share a special guest post with you all today from the lovely Hannah Read, the blogger behind Pages, Places and Plates. Hannah, like myself, struggles with her mental health and so understands just how important it is to take some time for yourself.
So grab a cup of tea, relax and get inspired to take some much-needed downtime this weekend.
From my own mental health issues, I’ve come to learn that taking time out every once in a while isn’t a luxury but a necessity. I have Seasonal Affective Disorder, meaning that for just under half the year I experience a drawn-out depressive episode due to a lack of vitamin D. Whilst medication and supplements help stabilise me my self-care routine is imperative to feeling well enough to truly function, and a big part of that is getting out of my home and unwinding in different places that can offer the right experiences to benefit my mood. Here are my top five places to visit when I need to work on my mental health.
The Beach
The first place I will always gravitate towards when my mental health has taken a hit is the beach. I’m lucky that I live just a minute away from the golden sands of the Sunshine Coast, and if I’m feeling particularly rubbish then I’ll take a stroll down there, or perhaps walk back from work that way. There’s something about the ocean breeze and that vast expanse of water, seemingly infinite, that makes me feel so raw and nourished. I especially love visiting when the waves are rough and full of energy, and watching them for 15 minutes or so really helps to ground me again.

Coffee Shops
When I’m feeling overwhelmed with work and life then I love to take a visit to a local coffee shop. My favourite is Starbucks at around 8.30am, way before the crowds have arrived. I usually go for their refillable filter coffee so I know I can sit there for a while and lose myself in the chilled out music and coffee shop vibe. If I’m overwhelmed but still have loads to do then this is the best way for me to be productive and take care of my mental health at the same time – I love the environment it brings and I tend to get so much more work done, feeling positive and accomplished at the end.
Natural Green Spaces
The wild has always called to me, and it’s one of my favourite places to unwind. Being surrounded by natural things – plants, animals, landscapes that have been shaped over time – gives me a real sense of peace, and it’s much easier to still the mind in their presence. I have a nature reserve local to me which is my go to place, but I always gravitate to any forests or natural trails that can offer that same sense of calm.

Galleries & Exhibitions
As well as my full-time job and blogging, I’m also an artist (when I have the time!). Like the natural world, art makes me feel calm and relaxed, and it brings me so much joy to look at an analyse. Art galleries tend to have this lovely muted atmosphere, making them the perfect place to unwind and focus on something that is truly for you. They are also a place that I’ve never had any issue experiencing alone, and the creativity that they can be inspire is so healthy for the brain, and will often lead to me getting out of whatever slump that I’m in.
Beyond The UK
This is my favourite choice for unwinding, however it’s not the cheapest or easiest most of the time! I always make sure to go away at least once a year (and often in the winter, when my SAD has really kicked in) – I get a sunshine boost, which is important, but it also brings new experiences and inspiration, and a way to just chill out without all the stresses of home and work. I love exploring – it gives me this infectious energy that can completely transform my mood – and getting away from the stressful and fast-paced culture we’ve become accustomed to in the UK can be the refresh that I really need. It doesn’t have to somewhere expensive, either – my favourite place abroad to unwind is an island in The Canaries where we travel repeatedly on a budget – just being in such a happy place like that does wonders for my mental health, and it doesn’t have to be luxury or fresh to have that effect.

Love Love this post! Self-care is absolutely a necessity, enjoyed the read, and thanks for sharing!
These sound wonderful – always great to have a much-needed to go place!
I think there is definitely something beneficial about the outdoors when it comes to mental health. I spent a lot of time outside when I’m anxious 🙂
I love going out for walks when i can feel my mental health struggling, fresh air and nature really help me. The sound of the ocean is so calming too x

Yes, the sound of the ocean is so calming. I don’t live close to the beach, so always use ocean sounds videos on YouTube. I also like to go out for a walk in the woods. Nature is really the best place you can go to when you feel down.

Loving this post & agreeing with every one of those places! I’m a particular lover of natural spaces.
I love the beach and the cemetery to relax, or a quiet outdoor place. Great post!
I enjoyed reading this. I like to do these things myself to unwind. Loved it!
I love this post. I enjoyed reading this, self-care is so important but it’s one of those things that people forget to do. This has inspired me to do a little self-care.
I honestly hate the beach but I love being near the sea, I love how amazingly calming it is.
I don’t ever get to a coffee shop alone but I am going to make a real effort to do this more. It sounds perfect x
Great post, I like how you take care good of your mental health and give yourself time to chill. I like the coffee and music idea because I do it sometimes as well haha.
Being able to get out and relax is always nice. The beach is great place to go some folks say that it is the natural ionized air that makes it so healthy for us who know I like to think that’s the reason.
Wonderful! The beach is my fave. Lucky to live near the sea too – in my case South of Spain.
Thanks for having me on your blog, and I’m glad I was able to inspire some readers! I guess it’s the perfect day to put these into practice now.
Great read, I too retreat to coffee shops or Green Landscapes when I’m getting over stressed.
All such great tips! And I totally agree with the natural green spaces. That always helps me feel better. Being immersed in nature. Great post!
I personally feel better at the beach than I would in coffee shops or in grouped places. Vacations aren’t so bad but it’s the getting there that does me in. Ideally, I would have loved to have gone up to the coast this summer but sadly my partner’s hours wouldn’t allow.
I’m also a huge lover of the beach to calm my brain. Something about ocean waves is just soothing. Wouldn’t have considered an art gallery but what a great tip! Art is also soothing to view and study. Love the bird photobomb next to the drinks. Excellent post, Hannah!
These are wonderful places to unwind. My absolute favorite place to unwind is in coffee shops. There’s something about the atmosphere that really brings be peace of mind. I’ve never been to Beyond the Uk. Sounds awesome!
I love going to the beach whenever I need a time out, as well as driving along the coast! Greenery is also super calming.
This sounds like the perfect place to live! I use to live not far from the beach and walking along the shoreline as the sun was starting to rise was always my favourite thing to do and so relaxing!
Hannah
Great post! I too like to unwind with a walk through the countryside; so relaxing.
My favourite place in the world is the ocean. It is so calming ❤
Such an important post to share! I also love the beach! I can’t go too often unfortunately but when I can, I really embrace the opportunity!
